This compact first story is by far the most entertaining of the three, mainly because it repeatedly pokes fun at otaku cultures of all stripes. (Carl Horn’s editorial notes - which at this point are starting to become more interesting than the manga they’re annotating - claim that Otsuka’ll return to this plot point later in the series but in the meantime it’s leaving a major plot hole in a series that doesn’t need any more setbacks.) Nevertheless, shift away from bite-sized stories into multi-chapter arcs continues throughout Volume 7: the first story is the only single-chapter entity in the volume, with the following two stories clocking in at two and three chapters apiece. Otsuka seems to have decided that it wasn’t such a good idea after all, since Volume 7 basically ignores this cliffhanger altogether by just dumping Karatsu back into the story as if nothing had happened.
